Staying Healthy with Minerals
Minerals unlike vitamins are not produced by the body, therefore it is very important to make sure the body is getting the proper supply of minerals in order to maintain optimum health. As with vitamins it is important to check with your own personal physician before taking minerals because the body requires every mineral in a specific amount. This can vary depending on an invidual and their diet. Other factors such medications and the interaction of minerals with other substances in the body can elso have an effect on how much of a particualr mineral might be needed. Since specific amounts of minerals are needed on a daily basis it is not always good to just simply load up on a variety of minerals. In fact improper amounts of minerals could actually cause negative effects.
Minerals can be broken down into two groups, major or macrominerals and minor or microminerals. With macrominerals experts have suggested the body will generally need more than 200 milligrams per day of these nutrients. These would include such things as calcium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus and sodium. Microminerals on the other hand are generally only needed in small amounts. These would include such things as boron, chromium, iodine, iron, selenium and zinc. Since many of both the macrominerals and microminerals may be obtained through the regular foods we eat it would be imperative for an individual to consult with their own personal physician to determine what additional mineral supplements might be right for them.
